What is Flying VFR?

When you first learn to fly airplanes, you’ll be trained to fly under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). These refer to a set of rules created by the FAA for flying in Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC).

VMC describes weather conditions that are generally clear enough to allow a pilot to see where their aircraft is going using visual references to the ground, landmarks and bodies of water while visually avoiding obstructions and other aircraft.

The responsibility for traffic separation lies entirely with the pilot when you’re flying VFR. Because ATC isn’t always required to keep VFR aircraft separate from one another, as a pilot, you need to be able to see in front of and around your aircraft while airborne.

That’s why VFR rules cover visibility requirements and cloud clearance criteria. The regulations ensure that you’ll be able to fly without the risk of crashing into other VFR aircraft.

Due to this need for visibility, there are limitations on when VFR pilots are allowed to fly. For instance, VFR pilots are not authorised to fly within clouds, where you might not be able to see any further than your windscreen.

Why use a Flight Planner?

Our nav log is an extremely useful tool when it comes to preparing for your VFR flights. You can use it to guide your preflight planning, develop an accurate knowledge of your route and key landmarks and seamlessly execute your plan when actually in flight.

It acts as a centralised base of all the information you need for your route in a single, easy-to-access place. That makes it a great tool for filling out a manual paper flight plan, too.

You’ll be able to complete the spreadsheet on your computer, saving you the time involved in filling out a messy, manual form that you might struggle to figure out while in the air. Print out as many copies you need for portable, convenient reference in the cockpit.

Best of all, our spreadsheets perform all the necessary calculations for you, which means you won’t have to worry about unintentional errors or mistakes that might compromise your journey. All of this great functionality – for free.
If you’re a student pilot, the Excel Pilot Logbook VFR Nav Log is a great way to practice using Microsoft Excel for logging flight details. You’ll build up familiarity and experience with a powerful software system that you can also use to put together your most important asset as a pilot – your Logbook.

787 aviation logbook

This is by far the best solution out there for new-generation professional pilots who want to want to keep an electronic logbook. You can stay up to date across all mobile or computer devices using selected cloud services. I love being able to access my logbook anywhere just through Excel and have it sync automatically. I came from Logten Pro and this much easier to use, as well as being cost-effective. Highly recommended.★★★★★

King Air Logbook

I too hate subscription-based logbooks. The only one that is nice is LogTen, all the others are horrible or they require gymnastics to fill them properly. But LogTen has two HUGE problems: almost $150 per year and ONLY Mac & iOS. Sucks. After huge research and a lot of tryouts, the Excel logbook solution is the only one really cost-effective, fully customizable and really cross-platform. Nice job!★★★★★

– Matt, Captain

A320 Pilot Logbook

I switched to this from some of the more expensive app-based electronic logbooks that require subscriptions and have never looked back. It’s brilliant!★★★★★

Perfect! Thank you again, can’t think of any way to improve on it. It definitely meets my needs. ★★★★★
